| SALEM, Ore. – LC State Volleyball nearly pulled off the upset on Friday in a narrow loss to No. 7 Corban (Ore.) in Salem. After dropping the first two sets, the LC State Warriors took the next two against the Corban Warriors to push the contest to five sets (25-17, 25-20, 23-25, 20-25, 15-10). The LC offense saw another big night from the duo of Juliauna Forgach Aguilar and Taylor Boyce where the paired totaled 20 kills each for the second time this season.
The loss drops the LC State record to 9-5 on the season and 6-3 in Cascade Conference play. Corban is now 11-2 on the year and 7-1 in the CCC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Corban controlled the first two sets of the contest. The hosting Warriors went on a 4-1 run in the first frame before Forgach Aguilar tallied the first LC State kill. Swings by Forgach Aguilar and Boyce evened the set 5-5, and tallies by Boyce and Anna Merrill kept LC State within one at 9-8. The Corban Warriors pulled ahead 21-11 and maintained a 10-point edge. LC fought off three set points with a kill by Karissa Lindner and a block by Merrill and Lindner, but Corban took the set 25-17.
Kills by Lindner and Hallie Seaman gave the LC Warriors a 3-2 edge in the second set before Corban jumped in front 12-6. An ace by Gianna Anderson kept LC within striking distance and a kill by Forgach Aguilar made it 15-13. A kill by Boyce and back-to-back service aces by Abbey Neff had LC within one, 20-19, but a rally by Corban closed the set 25-20.
Corban led by as much as 17-12 in the third frame, but LC State turned things around from there. A kill by Boyce sparked a seven-point run that was aided by a block by Lindner and Boyce, ace by Anderson and kill by Lindner to put LC ahead 19-17. A kill by Boyce kept LC in front by a slim margin before Corban answered to jump in front 23-22. A kill by Forgach Aguilar and block by Missy Mortensen and Merrill gave LC a 25-23 victory in the set.
LC State carried its momentum into the fourth set with kills by Seaman and Forgach Aguilar to take a 4-3 lead. Swings by Forgach Aguilar, Merrill and Boyce kept the advantage with LC State and a block by Lindner and Seaman had the score at 10-8.
Makenzie Stout dealt an ace and Boyce added a kill to grow the advantage to 16-12. An ace by Neff, her third of the night, made it 18-13. Corban cut the lead to one, 18-17, but back-to-back kills by Boyce and Forgach Aguilar pushed the advantage back to 20-17. A kill by Forgach Aguilar pushed the set to 24-20 and Stout evened the match with an ace at 25-20.
Corban took a commanding 8-2 lead in the deciding set to set the tone. Stout served an ace and Boyce notched a kill to cut the difference to three, 9-6, but Corban surged to grow the margin to 12-6. Boyce and Lindner tallied back-to-back kills at 12-8 but Corban went on to take the set 15-10 to end the match.

Forgach Aguilar led the match with 22 kills and Boyce notched a career-high 21. Both hit at clips of more than .210. Both LC State setters had double-doubles with Neff’s 26 assists and 11 digs and Esther Kailiponi’s 22 assists and 14 digs. Neff and Stout each dealt three service aces.
Natany Felix Guimaraes led the contest with 29 digs. Lindner led the LC State Warriors at the net with four block assists.
